  • Message from the CEO – May 2012

In only a few short weeks, the 2011-12 school year will come to a close.  It was only last July when we were racing to move furniture back into newly renovated classrooms and finishing up the six month long renovation project.  It wasn’t until December when the dining hall and all major portions of this project were complete.  While this was a challenging process, it was timely for the WASC visiting committee to see our beautiful campus and facility in the best condition. Thank you to everyone for helping to complete our WASC self-study and visitation process.  The visiting committee noted as key strengths the mission and vision of our school; beautiful campus; sound financial management; wide range of professional development opportunities; many school community volunteers; value on health and wellness; array of student support services; happy, engaged, responsible students; and the sustained thoughtful, collaborative process to create and align curricula with the mission and vision. As areas of need, the committee recommended that we continue to carefully monitor the budget and five year financial projections; complete the alignment of science and social studies curriculum k - 5; develop a technology plan; and continue to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of our programs in light of our vision. This was a very positive visit and we anticipate the WASC Accrediting Commission’s decision on our accreditation term sometime over the summer. For now, we look forward to May as the month of culminating activities as we bring another school year to a close.  May Day is just a few days away and our whole school will honor and celebrate the island of O’ahu.  Students, faculty, parents and staff have all worked hard to get to this moment when we celebrate our island heritage.  After the performance, we’ll have some fun playing Minute-to-Win-It.  It is a perfect year end celebration. The fourth grade has returned from the Big Island exhausted but exhilarated by the wonderful experience that celebrates their yearlong studies.  Fifth grade completed their second market day.  Third grade is putting the finishing touches on their science projects.  Second grade completed the Math in the Mall field trip and will celebrate the annual Rice Around the World.  First graders became animal experts and shared their research projects with parents.  Kindergarteners look forward to their field day.  Grades 3, 4, and 5 have one more opportunity to take the HSA test. Our fifth graders will mark the end of their elementary experience with a secret field trip.  They have nearly out grown our campus and are ready for the middle school experience. None of these events happens without months of planning and organizing and many volunteers who quietly help behind the scenes.  We thank the many hands that help to make all of this possible.  Our community spirit is alive and well.  Thank you for making this a wonderful year.  It continues to be a great privilege to work with all of you.
